The Living Word

For parents, sending kids back to school or to school for the first time can be both an exciting and intimidating experience.

Whether you send your kids to public or private school, or you homeschool your children, the school year can create a new dynamic in the family that brings joy and struggles.

How can parents keep faith at the center of the home when schedules start to fill up? How can parents and kids have healthy, God-honoring conversations about tough issues kids face at school? What are some ways families can stand firm in their faith when times get tough?

The Living Word, Southeast Christian Church’s bookstore, offers numerous resources, including books, devotions and studies to help parents lead and love their children well.

“The Storm-Tossed Family: How the Cross Reshapes the Home” by Russell Moore

Russell Moore is a speaker, author of several books and president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

In his book, “The Storm-Tossed Family,” Moore teaches that no matter who you are or where you come from, you are part of a family.

Moore looks at the ups and downs of being a member of a family, from joy and belonging to hurt and heartbreak, and how the Gospel of Jesus Christ reshapes what a family can be.

“When Your Kid is Hurting: Helping Your Child through the Tough Days” by Dr. Kevin Leman

A well-known psychologist and author, Dr. Kevin Leman looks at the hurts children face growing up and how parents can help their children cope with and rise above them.

Leman explores issues such as bullying, losing a loved one, discrimination, abuse, teen pregnancy and just trying to make sense of the world.

He encourages parents to avoid trying to “save” their children and offers practical, Biblical advice for loosening their grip and working together with their kids to overcome these difficult circumstances.

“How to Raise Selfless Kids in a Self-Centered World” by Dave Stone

Former Southeast Senior Pastor Dave Stone encourages parents to look to Scripture in his third book in the Faithful Families series.

Stone looks at service, generosity and forgiveness, among other topics to equip parents to raise their children to put God first and others second in their lives and uses his conversational style and humor to focus on the importance of building a strong spiritual foundation in the home.

“Swipe Right: The Life and Death Power of Sex and Romance” by Levi Lusko

Parents with teens know the difficulties of raising Godly children in a sexually-charged culture.

Levi Lusko is the pastor of Fresh Life Church and the author of three books. “Swipe Right” is Lusko’s answer to our present culture’s view of sex and romance.

Lusko draws on God’s Word and personal experience to encourage singles, couples and parents to embrace God’s view of sex and romance and how it can impact our lives now and for eternity.
