The Arnolds

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:8-9).

Gary Arnold carries a $2 bill with him everywhere he goes.

On the back of the $2 bill, Arnold has written his name, phone number and a simple message: “Jesus loves you.”

Arnold, 80, has used $2 bills as a tool to share the Gospel with others for years. He’s likely given away thousands.

“Several years ago, the Lord spoke to me and gave me a message to share with others about the $2 bill,” Arnold said.

Arnold said that when he shares with others, he tells them that the two on the bill represents the union a person can have with Christ when they repent of their sins and accept Him as their Lord and Savior.

“When we have union with Jesus, the two become one,” Arnold said.

Arnold accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at age 40 after someone gave him a copy of the Campus Crusade Gospel booklet, “Four Spiritual Laws.”

Arnold had reached a low point in his life. He and his wife were both working full time and raising four teenagers. Their marriage was on the brink of divorce, but God intervened.

“Right there in my office, I read through that booklet and prayed the prayer at the end: ‘Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.’” Arnold said.

Arnold was later baptized. He said his life verse is Joshua 1:8-9 because it reminds him of the strength God gives those who obey His Word.

“I read this verse for the first time in a Waffle House after a setback at work,” he said. “I read that and knew that God would always be with me.”

Joshua 1:8-9 continues to encourage Arnold to cling to the Truth of God’s Word and to be bold in sharing it with others. God has used it to bring about life change in Arnold and the people he connects with.

“The first time I gave someone a $2 bill, I was playing basketball with a young man name Tyrone,” Arnold said.

At the end of the pick-up game, the Lord prompted Arnold to give 16-year-old Tyrone a $2 bill and share the Gospel with him, so he did. Tyrone then decided to put his trust in Christ.

Since then, Arnold has committed to witnessing to at least one person a day. Every morning, He prays for God to send him opportunities to share the Gospel.

“I have this saying, ‘I go a-looking for where God is at work, and I am prepared to join Him in that work,’” he said.

Arnold rejoices in the many opportunities God has graciously given him to share the Gospel with others. Each encounter reminds him of God’s love and grace. The Arnolds have been members of Southeast Christian Church since 1984.

Every year, Arnold’s wife, Phyllis, orders $2 bills from the bank so that he can continue to share with others. Arnold shares his $2 bills with waitresses, people in stores and neighbors—even maintenance workers.

“A while back, Phyllis and I were driving home from Florida and got a flat tire,” Arnold said. “At first I thought, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’ but then I realized that there was someone coming to fix the flat, and I could talk to them about Jesus. Then I said, ‘Thank you, Jesus, for this opportunity!’”
