What a difference an ultrasound machine makes.
According to the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, 78% of mothers who see an ultrasound image of their unborn baby decide against having an abortion.
Crossroads Pregnancy Resource Center in Crestwood recently added free ultrasounds to counseling about pregnancy, abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, parenting classes and Bible studies.
Calls and appointments have already increased as word spreads through the community that ultrasounds are available.
“We believe ultrasounds will help us reach more women in a crisis situation,” said Crossroads Executive Director Laura Tapp. “While most women may already know they are pregnant when they call, they still need love, acceptance, support and a plan to care for their children. Adding ultrasound to our outreach lets us introduce women to their babies. We can determine the age of the baby and educate women about fetal development and have real discussions about fears and life and overcoming challenges.”
Clients describe Crossroads as a “place of healing, a safe haven, a place to learn, a place of hope.”
Susan, who asked to share her first name only, said she felt judged in the real world but not at Crossroads.
“They took me in and showed me what love is,” she said. “They brought me back to God and helped me find a church I love. They showed me how to be a good mom and the way back to God. That means everything.”
Tapp said many who come for help are overwhelmed as they try to navigate life on their own.
“We are most excited to see where God leads this ministry,” she said. “With the ultrasound, we have one more way to support and care for them.”
