Abortion clinics never closed during COVID-19. Neither did pro-life pregnancy centers.

With precautions in place such as temperature checks, wellness questionnaires, masks and social distancing, pregnancy center clients were able to talk with counselors, take Zoom classes, get a free ultrasound as well as pick up personal-care items and diapers.

The 48th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion is Jan. 22.

Southeast Christian Church supports five local pro-life pregnancy centers. Every one stayed open to meet clients desperate for help. Job loss, lack of health insurance, increased domestic violence and financial instability created added pressure for women dealing with pregnancy.

Diana Cahill is the executive director at ALC Pregnancy Resource Center in Shelbyville and Shepherdsville.

“There was no way we would shut our doors. These women need someone to love and care for them,” she said. “We called our moms to ask how to pray for them, ask what they needed and invite them to come for diapers, food, clothing, anything they needed. We had Facebook Bible studies and Zoom classes to encourage and equip them to get through the pandemic.”

Leisa Ray, development director at BsideU for Life, said the fact that abortion clinics stayed open during lockdown created an urgency for pregnancy centers to stay open. There is always traffic in their office next door to EMW Women’s Surgical Center in downtown Louisville, which was the only abortion provider in Louisville before Planned Parenthood began providing abortion services in January 2020.

Staying in touch through the pandemic is vital for clients like Rena, who just earned her high school diploma through GED tutoring and the Life Skills program at BsideU for Life. As a single mother of three children, she’s worked hard to overcome the hardship of growing up in foster care. She has been homeless and alone in parenting her children.

Much has changed in the year since walking into BsideU for Life. Besides earning her diploma, she attends Bible study and has completed classes in finances, parenting, wellness and other practical life skills. She now has a big dream to pursue a degree in social work to help other women going through similar challenges.

There is something everyone can do. Pro-life pregnancy centers always need volunteers and resources.
