Men of the Word

Men of the Word

Ask different men why they are regulars at the Saturday Morning Men’s Bible Study at Southeast at 7 a.m. and you’ll likely get different reasons.

1. Many men actually like getting up early on Saturdays.

This reason surprised retired Southeast Senior Minister Bob Russell back when he started the study 19 years ago. He doubted that many guys would show up at the crack of dawn on a morning that is
reserved for sleeping in. Russell was impressed when attendance quickly ballooned to hundreds of men.

2. Men recognize that there is strength in numbers.

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Eccl. 4:12). Some men come to the study because they recognize that the Christian life is not
meant to be lived in isolation.

Cecil McGee, who came up with the idea to start the Saturday study almost two decades ago, said that it’s become known as a place where “men can be men.” “It’s where men feel free to talk about their
temptations and struggles,” he said. “What is said at Saturday morning Bible study stays at Saturday morning Men’s Bible study.”

3. Studying the Bible feeds the soul.

“Like newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Peter 2:2).

Men attend the study because they recognize that the Bible is spiritual sustenance and that if the soul isn’t fed, there will be emptiness there.

4. There are lots of donuts and coffee.

Granted, it’s not a spiritual reason, but getting a glazed treat is extra incentive to attend for some—especially for young boys.

5. It’s a bonding experience.

Some men attend with their sons or nephews and use the study to springboard into deeper conversations about faith.

6. The Bible study’s leader is funny.

Most men agree that Joe Donaldson, who leads the study, is both a gifted teacher and comedian. His off-the-cuff humor keeps participants engaged.

7. The guest speakers are good. Really good.

On occasion, a guest speaker fills in for Donaldson at the study. Russell will guest teach this year, along with others.

The Saturday Morning Men’s Bible Study meets every Saturday, beginning Sept. 11, at 7 a.m., lower Fellowship Hall. Many men come as early as 6:30 for donuts and fellowship. This year, Donaldson will
teach through the book of Acts for a behind-the-scenes look at the supernatural power expressed through ordinary people creating the greatest movement in the history of mankind.
